The "Off Switch" is a Myth: How to Build a Business in the In-Between Moments

ree

If you’re waiting for a perfectly quiet, eight-hour block of time to finally launch your digital course or start that business, I have some news for you: You’re going to be waiting forever.

The biggest lie in the entrepreneurial world is that you need a "monk-like" focus and a pristine office to be productive. For most of us—the ones with kids, 9-to-5s, and endless "to-do" lists—business building doesn't happen in a vacuum. It happens in the gaps.

The Myth of the Founder’s "Off Switch"

We’ve all heard the advice: "You need to find a work-life balance. Just flip the switch and turn off your business brain at 5:00 PM."

But as a founder, that "switch" is a myth. When you are passionate about what you’re building, your brain doesn’t just stop. You’re standing in line at the grocery store and an idea for a module hits you. You’re at your kid's soccer game and you solve a marketing problem that’s been bugging you for days.

The goal isn't to force a shutdown; it’s to master strategic workflow design. It’s about learning how to capture those sparks and move the needle forward, even when you aren't sitting at a desk.

Introducing the "Quiche Method": Productive Multitasking

Most productivity gurus tell you that multitasking is the enemy. I disagree. I call my approach the Quiche Method.

The concept is simple: I might be making a quiche for dinner or getting a quick 10-minute workout in, but while that quiche is in the oven, I’m reviewing a landing page or outlining a lesson.

Building a business is about being productively unconventional. It’s not about doing two things at once poorly; it’s about utilizing the "wait times" of life to execute your "low-energy" business tasks.

Why the "Micro-Burst" Workflow Wins

Success in a digital course launch isn't built in one giant leap; it’s built in a thousand tiny steps. This is the Micro-Burst Workflow.

  • The 15-Minute Rule: If a task takes less than 15 minutes (like responding to a student or posting to LinkedIn), do it in a "micro-burst" while you’re waiting for your coffee to brew.

  • Capture the Momentum: Don't let a 2:00 AM idea vanish. Keep a digital notepad or voice memo app ready to catch those "off-switch" thoughts so you can execute them during your next work block.

  • Forgive the Mess: Your business building might look like working from your car or eating a salad in a parking lot between errands. That isn't failure—that’s flexibility.

Stop Waiting for Perfect

Your business doesn't need a 40-hour work week to start. It needs consistent, 20-minute pockets of intentionality.

The off switch might be a myth when you are starting/building a business, but the freedom you're building is very, very real.
